There’s been plenty of speculation as to who was the buyer of Wu-Tang Clan’s one-of-a-kind album Once Upon a Time In Shaolin after news emerged of it’s sale in November, but it has now been revealed that Martin Shkreli, the pharmaceutical executive who bought the rights to AIDS drug Daraprim and decided to jack the price up from $13.50 a pill to $750 a pill, is the man who bought it.

Bloomberg profiled the record’s unusual release and sale, stating that Shkreli successfully bid on the album at online marketplace Paddle8 after attending a private listening party where Paddle8 co-founder Alexander Gilkes told him he would have opportunities to rub shoulders with celebrities who would want to hear it. "Then I really became convinced that I should be the buyer," Shkreli told Bloomberg, also revealing that he had lunch with RZA in the build-up to the sale, "I can’t say I got to know him that well, but I obviously like him," Shkreli said of the experience.

Shkreli also spoke of his concerns about how Wu-Tang would react to the news of his drug price hike - "I was a little worried that they were going to walk out of the deal. But by then we’d closed. The whole kind of thing since then has been just kind of ‘Well, do we want to announce it’s him? Do we not want to announce it’s him?’ I think they were trying to cover their butts a little bit."

RZA also gave a statement to Bloomberg, saying that a significant portion of the proceeds from the sale will go to charity. "The sale of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin was agreed upon in May, well before Martin Shkreli’s business practices came to light. We decided to give a significant portion of the proceeds to charity."
