Berlin Has Banned Airbnb

Berlin has now made it illegal for tourists to rent apartments in the city through Airbnb, hoping to protect affordable housing and keep the rents as low as possible for residents. If anyone is found listing their apartment, they can be fined as much as €100,000 (approx. Ł78k).

The new law is called Zweckentfremdungsverbot and was put into place today. It bans the short-term let of apartments to tourists without a city permit, although it is still possible to rent single rooms, just not entire flats or houses.

"[It's] a necessary and sensible instrument against the housing shortage in Berlin," said Berlin's head of urban development, Andreas Geise, when speaking to The Local. "I am absolutely determined to return such misappropriated apartments to the people of Berlin and to newcomers."

In response, Airbnb spokesman Julian Trautwein said: "Berliners want clear and simple rules for home sharing, so they can continue to share their own home with guests. We will continue to encourage Berlin policy-makers to listen to their citizens and to follow the example of other big cities such as Paris, London, Amsterdam or Hamburg and create new, clear rules for normal people who are sharing their own homes."
