Twenty years after moving its manufacturing operations to Asia, adidas has announced that it's opening a brand new factory in Germany. This factory won't be like its others though - the brand intends to fully automate the production process with robots, leaving out humans completely.

The 4,600-square-metre plant, called the "Speedfactory", is still under construction, but apparently it will deliver its first set of around 500 shoes towards the end of this year. Large scale production will begin next year and, if successful, the brand plans to open other "Speedfactories" in the US, the UK and France.

The 301 million pairs of shoes adidas currently makes per year are almost all made by hand thanks to its almost one million Asian workers, but the new measures should help the company meet its goal of 331 million pairs a year by 2020.
