Wired has just shared an article which is pretty terrifying. They report that a team of researchers at Ben Gurion University in Israel have created a piece of code which is proof-of-concept that hackers can control your computer to record through your headphones. The experimental malware they have made repurposes speakers in earbuds or headphones as microphones, so recording can be undertaken even if you think your device’s actual microphone is switched off.
Mordechai Guri, the research lead of Ben Gurion’s Cyber Security Research Labs says: "People don’t think about this privacy vulnerability. Even if you remove your computer’s microphone, if you use headphones you can be recorded. This is the real vulnerability... It's what makes almost every computer today vulnerable to this type of attack."
So, uh, horrible news for everyones privacy, especially seeing as a law just passed giving UK intelligence agencies and the police the most sweeping surveillance powers in the western world. Wohoo 2016!
