Premium camera brand RED is releasing a smartphone with a "holographic" display

RED - a premium camera manufacturer - has just announced its moving into the highly competitive world of smartphones, and it believes it has something new to add to the industry.

The first RED smartphone is called the Hydrogen One and it costs a rather eye-watering $1,195 (the iPhone 7 starts at $649). It will however, feature an impressive 5.7-inch display (the iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch display, for comparison) and will use nanotechnology to "seamlessly [switch] between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games."

It's currently a little unclear how this "holographic multi-view content" will work, but people are predicting it will be similar to the 3D display found on the Nintendo 3DS. It'll also have the ability to covert stereo sound into "multi-dimensional audio", whatever that means.

Those who like to be able to customise and upgrade their devices will be pleased to hear it will allow for modular attachments, particularly those that focus on photography, and will be able to work alongside RED's camera range.

The Hydrogen One is now available to pre-order with prices starting at $1,195. It will ship in early 2018.
