Facebook has started testing ads in the Messenger app

Now that Facebook has successfully forced 1.2 billion monthly users to download its separate Messenger app, the company has unveiled its plans to start monetising that huge user base.

Ads are due to start appearing on the home tab of the Messenger app which, once clicked, will either take the user to the advertiser's website or into a new chat window where they can interact with the brand. There will be an option to hide specific ads, but it won't be possible to remove the ads entirely.

Mobile ads currently make up 85% of Facebook's ad revenue, so it makes perfect sense for the company to expand into this category, even if it is a little annoying for users.
