Directed by Bryan Singer, the film chronicles Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, all the way up until the band's Live Aid performance in 1985, six years before the Mercury died of complications from AIDS.

Of course, Malek bares a resemblance to the legendary singer, but it's still a very high pressured role to take on. Speaking about the task, Malek said his aesthetic similarities "only adds to the level of confidence that one would need to play Freddie Mercury."

"When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror," Malek said when speaking to Entertainment Weekly, recalling the first time the team did his hair and makeup. "It’s a very affirming moment."

To make the film more realistic, scenes where Mercury is singer will predominantly use recordings of the singer or a soundalike. "We’re going to use Freddie as much as possible and use myself as much as possible," said Malek. "I’m in Abbey Road [Studios] right now if that should say anything to you. I’m not working on my acting."

Bohemian Rhapsody is due for release on 25 December, 2018.
