Following recent screenings at Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, the debut trailer for Alexander Payne’s (About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants) new film Downsizing has arrived.

Starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, and Kristen Wiig, the film is a mix of sci-fi and comedy set in a near-future where scientists have come up with an ingenious solution to over-population - shrink humans to 0.364% of their body mass.

The idea of shrinking looks pretty appealing in the trailer - the tiny people have huge houses, giant bottles of vodka, and $52,000 is equivalent to $12.5 million. Take a look at it above!

Downsizing is out in cinemas on 22 December. Have a read of the official synopsis from Paramount pictures below:

When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to over-population, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.
