Experimental architecture and design practice The D*Haus Company has just completed the extension of a Victorian house on Columbia Road, famous for its flower market.

The owners of the home wanted to maximise space and light on the ground floor, opening up the rear facade while at the same time keeping the outside courtyard space. To achieve this goal, The D*Haus Company drew inspiration from the curved garden brick wall, knocking through the outside wall of the house and extending the kitchen right up to this existing structure.

The addition of a beautiful patterned polished concrete floor that goes right through the kitchen living room all the way to the external courtyard blurs the "sense of what’s inside and out, so in fairer weather, there is not two rooms but one large one."

"The next large wall to go was the existing kitchen wall with its small sash windows that kept the existing room in near darkness," said the firm. "Opening this up with a large steel beam meant we were able to accommodate a dining table for 8 people framed under a giant skylight above one’s head and a giant steel pivot door that is even bigger, to access the courtyard."
