Watch the "New Generation" short film narrated by Kojey Radical

XL Recordings brilliant New Gen compilation album from 2017 showcased the best new UK artists in grime, hip-hop, trap and new wave R&B, and now a new short film to accompany the album has just been released by directing duo The Rest (Alex Motlhabane and Lewis Levi).

Titled New Generation, the hard-hitting 15-minute film features freestyles from Kojey Radical, Dotty and AJ Tracey, and rather than being a film directly about the music from the New Gen album, it focusses on the issues faced by those people who make the music and the world they came from.

The film was partially shot around Grenfell Tower before the tragic fire broke out in 2017, and features scenes of police violence and knife crime. Director Lewis Levi explains:

"When we first came up with the concept of the film, we just wanted to put a spotlight on these issues, which are ingrained in the black experience of living in the UK’s inner cities. But it was shocking to us to find out in pre-production that almost every person we spoke to about the film had had someone close to them either get hurt or die because of crime within the city - mostly knife or gang related. These are issues that happen so regularly you read about them and then just move on, it’s normal."
