Coca-Cola is releasing its first ever alcoholic drink

After 130-years of only manufacturing soft drinks, Coca-Cola will be branching out and producing its first ever alcoholic beverage.

The drink will be launched in Japan and will be a type of alcopop known as Chu-Hi, which contains distilled shochu alcohol mixed and flavoured carbonate water. Alcopop's have hugely grown in popularity in Japan in recent years, with a drink called hiLicky fuelling much of the growth.

"This is a canned drink that includes alcohol; traditionally, it is made with a distilled beverage called shochu and sparkling water, plus some flavouring," said Jorge Garduńo, Coca-Cola's Japan president, when confirming the drink. "We haven’t experimented in the low alcohol category before, but it’s an example of how we continue to explore opportunities outside our core areas."

He added that this would be a very modest, focused "experiment" and would not be produced on a large scale. If it is successful, it's likely it would still remain in Japan only due to the "unique and special" qualities of the market there.
