Facebook is testing its own version of Patreon to lure creators

In an attempt to lure content creators away from YouTube, Facebook is trying out its own version of subscription service Patreon, which will allow fans to make a $4.99 per month payment to their favourite creators in returns for special features, exclusive content, and a "fan badge".

At the moment, Facebook won't be taking a cut from that $4.99, showing just how keen they are to bring in fresh talent, although because the payment will be made within the Facebook Creator app, the App Store (or Google Play on Android) will take a 30% cut. That leaves the creators with $3.50.

Other features currently being tested include leaderboards for the most engaged fans and different badges to earn.

"Creators are vibrant, diverse, and wonderful at building community, bringing people from across the world together around shared passions – and that’s why Facebook is a natural home for them" said Facebook's VP of product for video, Fidji Simo.

Creators can now try out the new product and monetisation methods by signing up here. The app is currently only available for iOS but will launch for Android soon.
