A self-driving Uber vehicle has struck and killed a 49-year-old woman in Arizona, marking the first ever fatal crash involving an autonomous vehicle and a pedestrian in the US.

According to police reports, the woman was walking outside of the crosswalk and there was an operator inside the car at the time of the incident. She was rushed to hospital but later died.

"Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident," said Uber on Twitter. "Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened," added Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber's CEO.

Uber has been testing self-driving vehicles in California since 2016 and now operates them in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.

Tesla Motors was the first to disclose a death as a result of a self-driving car when, in 2016, a Model S in autopilot mode failed to detect a large white lorry, most likely due to the similarities between its colour and the colour of the cloudy sky behind it. The car drove full speed into the side of the vehicle, killing the 40-year-old behind the wheel.

Uber is currently assisting in the "active investigation" and has paused all its self-driving vehicle activity.
