MINI has unveiled an all-electric version of the classic MINI Cooper, combining its heritage with its ambitious plans for the future.

The car was showcased at the New York motor show and, while its a one-off, it gives us a hint at what MINI has planned with its first series production electric model, which is due out next year.

Speaking to Autocar, senior vice president at MINI, Sebastian Mackensen, said that next year's electric car will be pivotal to the company's future and will be firmly rooted in the company's core values. "We always joke and say if Issigonis was to invent the Mini today, it would definitely be an electric car," he said. "It is the answer to current challenges, as the original Mini was in 1959."

Little is known about MINI's electric car in terms of spec and design, but Mackensen said it will be significantly toned down from the concepts they've revealed and will look pretty similar to the original Cooper, with just a few nods to its eco-friendly motor.
