Land Rover's Range Rover Velar has been named "the most beautiful car on the planet" at the 2018 World Car Awards, with judges praising the mid-sized SUV for its modern, sophisticated form both inside and out.

"[It] leads with its harmoniously integrated human‐machine‐interface design, and with colour and material design featuring, amongst other innovations, a vegan option," said judge Sam Livingstone, as the vehicle was named World Car Design of the Year at the New York International Auto Show.

The panel were also impressed by the way its designers managed to retain the true Range Rover DNA, first brought to life by Charles Spencer King with a series of prototypes in 1969, which were also codenamed Velar.

According to the company, the Velar fills a gap in their range between the smaller Range Rover Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport and was created through an "unwavering belief in reductionism". It also features the brand new multimedia system, which Autocar says "should fear nothing offered by any rival".

The Range Rover Velar starts at £44,830 and goes all the way up to £72,630 for the V6 R-Dynamic model.
