An Austrian startup is making HD vinyl

A new method of production has been conceived which apparently allows for vinyl records to be made with such precision that it gives it higher audio fidelity, louder volume, and up to 30% longer playing times.

The patent was filed by Austrian-based startup Rebeat Innovation, which has now received $4.8 million in funding to make the technology a reality. That means the so-called "HD vinyl" could be hitting shelves as early as next year.

The new process converts digital audio to a 3D topographic map, which lasers then inscribe onto the stamper, which in turn stamps the grooves into the vinyl. The resulting record can still be played on a traditional record player, but will produce a sound more faithful to the recording.

Look out for HD vinyl in a record store near you in summer 2019.
