Netflix aims to make 1,000 original titles this year

Netflix is not messing around when it comes to original content, aiming to release an incredible 1,000 original titles by the end of 2018. That's 300 more than it first planned back in February, which reveals just how intent the company is on taking on big Hollywood studios and television networks, while also competing against services like Amazon Prime.

While it's worth noting that many productions, including big hits such as House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, are licensed from other studios rather than being produced in house by Netflix, it's still no small feat to put out that much content in twelve months. The strategy is clearly paying off as well, as despite big companies like Disney, Fox, NBC Universal, and CBS all pulling their content from Netflix, the company now boasts more than 109 million global subscribers, 90% of whom tune into Netflix original content "regularly", bringing in revenue of $11.6 billion USD (in 2017).

On the down side, this massive push for new content, as well as licensing from lots of different studios, means Netflix originals massively vary in quality, ranging from the critically acclaimed Stranger Things to the less well-received Cloverfield Paradox. But, if this "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" method brings us shows like BoJack Horseman, then who are we to complain?
