• How The iPhone Could Have Looked

  • In the lead up to the release of the iPhone 5, we've managed to get hold of a patent submitted by Apple all the way back in 1985. The sketches are for a potential Apple flip-phone design which was going to be in the shape of an actual apple (their logo) and would have a push keypad. Pretty unbelievable when you look at their current array of sleek and minimal products. Do you think people would have bought into this design in the 80s?

    • It's clearly a wired, landline phone, and not a cellular phone (or even a cordless phone). The design criteria for landline phones (aside from the obvious speaker/microphone position) doesn't generally inform cellular phones (and vice versa). This phone was never intended to do all that an iPhone would, because landline phones simply don't do that sort of thing. It's also a novelty thing, like the Sports Illustrated "football phone". Nobody "buys into" that; they get it as a promotional gift.
