  • UK-based practice Zaha Hadid Architects have been selected to design the new Japanese national stadium, winning the commission over nine other finalists. Replacing the existing Kasumigaoka National Stadium, the impressive new 80,000-seat stadium will be the main sporting venue for the 2020 Olympic Games if Japan win the bid to host the event. It is also possible that the 2019 Rugby World Cup will be held there and it is also being pitched to FIFA as a possible venue for future World Cup football matches. Completion is scheduled for 2018.
