Seeing as "the" is the most commonly used word in the English language, famous Australian restauranteur Paul Mathis has decided it should have its own symbol, much like "and" has "&". The symbol he's invented is similar to the cyrillic letter "Ћ" and combines an uppercase T and a lowercase h. "The word 'and' is only the fifth-most used word in English," said Mathis when speaking to The Age, "and it has its own symbol – the ampersand... isn't it time we accorded the same respect to 'the'?"
He's not joking around either. He's already invested around $75,000 AUD (approx. £45,000) developing the symbol, believing it could save a lot of people a lot of time. Not to mention allowing for longer tweets. He's also produced a range of Android keyboards called "THE Keyboard" which include the Ћ symbol. The most expensive keyboard in the range also features hortcuts for the 14 next most-used words in the English language. What do you think, does "the" deserve its own shortcut symbol?
