• Art Student Plans To Publicly Lose Anal Virginity
  • Posted 13 months ago by Jack Lowe · Art & Design · 185141 Views
  • Clayton Pettet - a 19-year-old second year student at London's Central Saint Martins - says he is planning on publicly losing his anal virginity. The one-time-only performance art piece is entitled "Art School Stole My Virginity" and will involve Pettet and a gay friend engaging in safe anal sex on stage at an art space in Hackney, east London. He expects between 50 and 100 classmates and other members of the public to attend, although now that the piece has received press through media outlets like The Huffington Post it may be significantly more. "The key thing about performance art is that it should only be performed once, and this is the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime performance," said Pettet. "Since culturally we do hold quite a lot of value to the idea of virginity I have decided to use mine and the loss of it to create a piece that I think will stimulate interesting debate and questions regarding the subject." On his Tumblr page, Clayton explains the piece in further detail, writing:

"The Idea of 'Art School Stole My Virginity' came around when I was sixteen, when all my peers at school were losing their Virginity it was incredibly hard for me to ask why I was still a Virgin and why it meant so much to the people all around me. My piece isn't a statement as much as it is a question. The whole aspect of Virginity was incredibly emotional for me and has been ever since. It became a thought process that turned into the performance piece that I wish to create for the public on January the 25th. The London Art Scene has slowed down recently and whilst London is in its prime and is constantly changing the contemporary artists are the same and they aren’t so contemporary anymore. I want my piece to inject some speed into the arts, a performance of the people if you will. I feel like now is the time for the new scene. To lose my Virginity with the new age is the Avant Garde that London has been unintentionally waiting for."

    • Please please please recognise how wrong this is. Sex is a private thing. This is absolutely disgusting and if you don't think that then what do you think? What do you believe????????? AHHHHH.... why is the university allowing this/???
    • Binx Posted 13 months ago · 47
    • Sex may be a private thing, but it is not disgusting.
    • . Posted 13 months ago · 75
    • Sex can be a private thing if you want it to be. Or it can be a semi-public thing if you want it to be. It can be super comfortable or it can be a little painful if you like it like that. It can come from love, or it can come from lust, it could even just be fun. Sex can be whatever you want it to be, don't impose your values on other people (mostly aimed at Binx). The only thing that isn't up for debate when it comes to sex is consent.
    • Hachiiiko Posted 12 months ago · 53
    • Binx, this obviously has nothing to do with the university apart from the fact that he studies there, it's not a commentary that the institution "stole" his virginity as much as his peers and the pressures. Sex is what people want it to be, there is no wrong or right way as long as everyone is consenting...

    • art noun \ˈärt\ : something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings : works created by artists : paintings, sculptures, etc., that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings : the methods and skills used for painting, sculpting, drawing, etc.

    • WELL... and your comments above are in fact a proof of what art is- showing that he's performance belongs to the category. Art is something that provoke discussion, thought- a change of view or another angle. It is questioning society, its role, beliefs and set of rules. Socially, politically, historically and contemporary. Relating to context and beeing out of context, pushing boundaries and creating new ones. Always searching for answers, questioning and oppose.

    • John Posted 13 months ago · 73 Reply
    • Utter bullshit. You can't just shrug it off as art JUST because it provokes discussion, many things provoke discussion in life. The question of change in context? Well that's a simple one, instead of the room being filled with middle aged men with there nobs out at some peep show in soho, it will instead be filled with contemporary art affectionados, quietly contemplating the "meaning" of this piece, whilst slyly covering up that erection of there's with the exhibition catalogue. Not quite sure how that makes it art?

    • This guy is being pushed by the relentlessness and ridiculous extremes that modern art demands nowadays. Its an interesting concept yes, and is steering a lot of debates which i congratulate him for, however sex is nothing new in the art world, what is shocking about this is the fact that he is putting him self though a hugely emotional and personal experience publicly, I just hope he has though about all the consequence and the effects they will have later on his life socially and emotionally.

    • I shall injest green food coloring and publicly defecate . It will be a one time performance, and the piece of will be called "Slurm". People used to spend their lives learning and practicing their skills before they can create art. Yes the world has changed, but bending over and taking a cock for the first time is a piss take. Altho Im not saying there isnt an art to sex. What really pisses me off is that of he focused on the emotional, social and political side his story that led up to the moment then it would have some artistic merit. Hell, just dedicating it to Putin would make it worth while, without those things, its just a shocking act. A video of a beheading on Facebook is shocking, but by no means is it art. Therefore my piece dubbed Slurm has more artistic value solely on the basis that it is satirizing his opinion of what is art. also, if my piece is well received i may consider a uk tour.

    • Well, someone is definitely excited...and certainly homophobic. To counteract your...demand, the likes of which you have no authority to make, would rounding up all homosexuals and executing them...not be an act of depravity itself? You are singling out a group of people, based solely on their beliefs and practices, because they go against your own. That, my friend, is prejudice of the highest degree. A few people in the past thought like you, and did commit such violent and evil acts. You know where their proverbial road ended? Ironically, suicide.

    • it's a shame that all of the comments on this post all come from such a dated view of art theory, its not a question of whether or not this IS art it is whether or not it is good art. You're absolutely entitles to an opinion on this but inevitably this kid has thought this through and geared himself up for this. Its a commentary on how sex is viewed (in 2013) and all of the stigmas that are still attached to it, we've been having sex for centuries but we still let society dictate the ways that it is done and its context. Well done kid, i just hope that the press don't get to view it as they will absolutely miss the point.

    • Art is a word. A feeling that is personal, which would mean it varies in everyone. Many people see Body Modification as Art, Then their are many that do not. Social Class has a lot to do with what is perceived as Art, To me personally I accept that it is a form of Art, The idea that it offends many means the piece is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. I do not have to agree with it to accept it. Who am I to judge and who is everyone else. Those who wish to support it will go. If the idea disgusts you, then do not go and let that be the end of it. Lots of Art is like this. Andres Serrano offended many with "Piss Christ". Look it up. The point being there are many different forms of art that will offend, enlighten and inspire. It is not limited to Paintings, Writings and Songs and Sculptures.

    • Anything can be art. Art is communication. Some people like to watch things and communicate without having to look at the description placed in front of an "empty box" installation, for instance. But nowadays the avantgarde art thingy is going more about the sub context of the things exhibited. So this might be impacting for the first type of audience. Because if you don't really read what the idea behind is the only thing you will see would be a boy getting is butt hole pierced.
    • MOMOUNIMO Posted 12 months ago · 68 Reply
    • I can appreciate the idea behind it. I like how he's illustrating the concept. It's pretty extreme but I find it interesting and it is getting people to talk about it. I don't care who he is, if he's looking for attention, but I do care about the idea and concept and I think the fact that people are talking about it, have opinions about it, and are thinking about it and its implications is art enough.

    • Im concerned for him as he's going to be in an awful lot of pain which I don't think he's thought through. Half way through he's going to realize that it's not art & regret it forever. It's sex, first time sex, and first time sex is never the art we expect it will be. He probably won't be able to get hard with nerves anyway. This is interesting for me because I did a media peice on pornography & the worlds fascination with it, and I focused on gay porn. I discovered that some is beautiful and some is just filth. But I think this is going to be one of the most distressing experiences of the guys life. But hey, he has to do it to find that out.
    • The Kid Posted 12 months ago · 92 Reply
    • I haven't read any of the other comments, so sorry if this is repeating something, but I was just thinking. Whilst losing your anal virginity might be a meaningful and potentially painful experience, I somehow can't think of it as being anywhere near as meaningful as a woman's virginity. Firstly, physically it's different. A girl/woman has a hymen, which when broken, symbolises a coming of age and an ability to reproduce etc. A mans anal virginity isn't exactly a seal that will be broken as he transitions from boyhood to manhood, more simply just something getting pushed into his arse rather than pushed out. It's not exactly the first time something has passed through that canal. Well, hopefully. So while it's a meaningful experience for the couple involved, I just don't really feel that it has the same conceptual gravitas as something involving a woman's virginity. Performance artists have been shitting on stage for years and strippers/pornstars have been fucking on stage since forever... what is he bringing to the table other than self indulgence? Though I guess a lot of people are talking about it now so maybe that makes it relevant and successful. All of the above comments are validating this — in my opinion — fairly shoddy concept. Oh well, I guess it's a successful piece of internet based art whether the actual event happens or not.

    • The courts define Pornography as "things that cause sexual thoughts, that has no artistic merit." so we can end the debate about whether or not it is art. It isn't. This is a publicity stunt, which he will regret for the rest of his life. So I say, whatever, let him learn his lesson the hard way. (no pun intended)
