Sainsbury's have upped their game this year, releasing a long-form Christmas commercial which could well see the John Lewis ad knocked off the top spot. Entitled "Christmas Is for Sharing", the spot was conceived by AMV BBDO and takes us back 100 years to the trenches of World War I, when in 1914 there was a Christmas truce between British and German soldiers.

Working alongside the Royal British Legion, director Ringan Ledwidge did his best to ensure all the details were as accurate as possible, basing scenes on original reports and letters from the time and working with historians for the entire process.

"Christmas is a special time of year when people come together to share simple moments and kindnesses," said Mark Given, the head of brand communications at Sainsbury's. "This year, we wanted to reflect that theme of sharing in our Christmas campaign through the lens of one of the most extraordinary moments of sharing in modern history, when on Christmas Day 1914, British and German soldiers laid down their arms, and came together on neutral territory to share stories, mementos and even a game of football."
