John Stezaker

By splicing together and collaging classic movie stills, vintage postcards and book illustrations, British artist John Stezaker gives old images new meaning and examines the photograph as a documentation of truth. Perhaps his most famous series, Mask, cleverly fuses the profiles of famous Hollywood stars with picturesque cliffs, caves and waterfalls to create surreal, witty, new works of art.

Up until the mid-2000s, when Stezaker's work was re-discovered by the art market, solo exhibitions of Stezaker's work were far and few between, but now, a new major retrospective at London's Whitechapel Gallery offers us the chance to see over 90 of the artist's works dating back to the 1970s, when Stezaker first reacted against the then dominant Pop Art.

The exhibition will be running until 18 March, 2011.
