  • Since 2008 Sueshiro Sana, a ninth-generation Japanese shipwright, has produced eleven beautifully hand-crafted wooden bikes out of mahogany. This isn't just the frame either - by drawing inspiration using techniques learnt whilst shipbuilding, Sana has been able to produce forks, seat posts, seat, stems, handlebars and even rims from wood as well.

According to Sana, the bike's structure isn't compromised by the material either - in fact it's improved. Apparently the mahogany lends flex and responsiveness in a way no metal frame ever could, giving riders an increased sense of control. The weight of the bike is just as good as well, with the full build coming in at just 8 kg, down from 11 kg on the first bike he built. Because of this, a number of his bikes have actually been raced professionally and have stood up to the test through all terrains and weather types.

    • Its cool, but let be real. Italians made wood wheels for track racing and road bikes back in the day and its just not the right material. Flex Weight and lets cut more trees right....???
