A new report from The Information suggests that Apple is preparing a major pivot away from the iPhone to push further into the world of wearable tech – specifically a pair of augmented reality smart glasses.

Details suggest prototypes of the glasses were presented to Apple employees in California and roll out plans were revealed for 2022.

It’s believed the first version to hit the market will be similar to Facebook’s Oculus Quest virtual-reality headset, featuring a high resolution display and cameras mounted to the outside. A year later, in 2023, a sleeker pair are due to be released which will resemble something similar to traditional sunglasses.

Companies such as Google and Snapchat have struggled to build traction with their smart glasses in the past, so it will be interesting to see if Apple will be able to shake up the market in the same way they did with the smartphone and tablet. If successful, this new product certainly has the potential to exceed iPhone sales, which are continue to slowly decline.
