It’s been revealed that Aquaman has become the biggest grossing film in the DC Extended Universe franchise.
Released less than a month ago on 14 December, it stars Jason Momoa in the lead role alongside Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren and Willem Dafoe.
The title was taken from 2016’s Batman v Superman, which managed to pull in £686 million. As on 5 January, it was estimated that Aquaman had already amassed £697 million in box office revenue.
Despite its these financial milestones, the film failed to impress Oscar voting members when it came to visual effects and didn’t make the cut for the shortlist of the VFX category, something director James Wan wasn’t too happy about.
“Kelvin [McIlwain, visual effects supervisor], you and your department are the unsung heroes of this film,” he wrote. “The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren’t recognizing or appreciating what we/you’ve all contributed to the film and cinema is a fucking disgrace.”
