According to new reports, Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling, and Ezra Miller have all been shortlisted to play the iconic role of Willy Wonka in Warner Bros. upcoming spin off.
Paddington director Paul King has been brought on to lead the project, working with Harry Potter producer David Heyman and screenwriter Simon Rich. Very little is known about the film at this stage, but it’s believed to be a prequel that will explore Wonka’s origin story (when and how did he meet the Oompa Loompas? etc…)
Warner Bros. has been working with Ryan Gosling for years on films including Blade Runner 2049, Crazy, Stupid Love, The Nice Guys and Gangster Squad, as well as picking up his directorial debut Lost River, so he seems the likely choice, although Glover’s character and natural charisma somehow seems better suited to the role. He also doesn’t have a huge amount of film work on the horizon (apart from voicing Simba in Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King and starring in FX series Atlanta) despite playing a major role in the just-released Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Everything is still just rumours at the moment, but who do you think would best fit the bill?
