According to a new piece by Variety, Warner Bros. will be building on the foundations laid by 2016’s Suicide Squad by giving Jared Leto a Joker film of his own. A source told Variety that “Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film”.
The studio is clearly pushing to build a whole world around Suicide Squad, with Margot Robbie also set to star in a spin off movie focussing around Harley Quinn. A sequel to Suicide Squad is also in the works, which is believed to be going into production sometime next year.
Leto’s performance as The Joker received very mixed reviews and even fans of his role weren’t pleased with how little screen time he got. Speaking to IGN in 2016, Leto also revealed he was upset with how much footage got cut: “Were there any that didn’t get cut,” Leto asked. “I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.”
More details will no doubt be announced or leaked in the coming months.
