Today we get a taste of something new from Disney Pixar – an animated feature film called “Soul”.
It focusses around Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a middle school teacher living in New York City who, after suddenly dying in an accident, realises he should have spent more of his life doing what he really loves – playing jazz. Gardner’s soul is sent to a place called You Seminar, where he meets a teen spirit named 22 (voiced by Tina Fey) who helps him on a journey through the afterlife to get his body back.
According to the director – two-time Academy Award-winner Pete Docter – the idea for the story is 23 years in the making. “It started with my son—he’s 23 now—but the instant he was born, he already had a personality,” says Docter. “Where did that come from? I thought your personality developed through your interaction with the world. And yet, it was pretty clear that we’re all born with a very unique, specific sense of who we are.”
Release is due for 19 June, 2020. Watch the trailer above.
