Tesla has teased a new “Plaid” powertrain that promises to make the Model S, Model X, and second generation Roadster achieve even faster speeds than its current “Ludicrous” model.
According to Elon Musk, the new powertrain, which uses three electric motors instead of the current two, is “about a year away from production”. To show just how ridiculous it is, Tesla proceeded to set the fastest lap ever for a 4-door at the Laguna Seca track, achieving an eye-watering time of just one minute 36 seconds. That’s one second faster than the previous record.
Sadly for Tesla though, track officials were not present while the Tesla was testing, meaning the time will not be recorded as an official record. Footage of the run is above.
