Three years after 2015’s Oscar-winning Room, director Lenny Abrahamson is returning with his first ever foray into the world of horror. The Little Stranger is a marked departure from the quirky, indie films Abrahamson made his name for, but based on the trailer this will be an exciting new addition to the 2018 release schedule.
Set in 1948, it’s based on author Sarah Waters’ 2009 novel of the same name and stars Domhnall Gleeson in the lead role as a country doctor. “During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked,” reads the synopsis. “The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants – mother, son and daughter – are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely, and how disturbingly, the family’s story is about to become entwined with his own.”
Co-stars include Ruth Wilson, Charlotte Rampling, and Alison Pargeter. The Little Stranger will be released on 31 August 2018.
