Team Vesco’s Turbinator II has broken its own world-record for the fastest wheel driven vehicle.
Just one month ago the team managed to reach a staggering 482.6 mph, but now they’ve smashed through the 500 mph mark at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The new speed was achieved thanks to modifications such as lighter spun-aluminum wheels and a new Chinook helicopter engine with increased horsepower.
The final speed was recorded at 503 mph, but unfortunately it hasn’t been registered as an official world record because weather conditions on the day made it impossible to achieve the speed in the other direction.
While 503mph is the fastest a wheel-driven vehicle has ever travelled, it’s still quite a distance off the 760 mph land speed record set by the jet-powered Thrust SSC, but the team hope they will be able to edge closer to that target within the next few years.
